Actually no. He's just sleepy.]

But you're right, I'm being a bit stupid. It's difficult to think when I keep waking up at odd hours and most of the dreams are revolved around a happy world with my friends and Atem devolving into a nightmare.

I suppose I am. We live together, and he's helped me through a lot. It's not that all the rest of my friends aren't important, I care about everyone very much.

It's different though, with Atem. I've never been as good a friend with him, so it's nice. We can depend on each other when things get bad.

I get the feeling you and I handle friendship a lot differently, regardless. You've at least had friends outside of your family for most of your life.

I didn't really have too many friends so much as game mates and hangers-on before Yugi and the rest of our friend group though. I'm very grateful for my bonds.

How do you do deal with friendships?

I alternate between asking questions to get to know people, and teasing the living hell out of them. If you hadn't noticed. ;) I think it's why Atem and I get along so well.

Anyway, I could see that. I suppose it's not terrible, to feel so comfortable with someone that you could tease them, while simultaneously wanting to learn about them because you care.

I'm sure you and Atem will have a murder game sorted out any day now, right?

Well firstly, calling them 'murder games' is perhaps a bit gratuitous. It's just that the last one I was present to did end in death. Because we needed to feed.

I know this sounds awful, but...Atem's really creative and makes up a compelling game. The only shame is that people generally don't realize their shortcomings in time to win.

I wouldn't want to be on the other side of a penalty game though. If you're interested I can tell you the one I was party to though.

Alright well. It was after Atem came back from the dead, you know. After the whole parasite thing.

I couldn't be trusted with moral decisions so he took charge of the hunt, and we went after a cameraman who was trying to extort his coworker with compromising footage. It was convenient, I suppose.

[Eugh. He hated saying that.]

Anyway. I'm not even sure how Atem pulled this one off, I should ask him sometime, but he had two vials with him. One with sedative and the other with soda water. He offered the guy full access to whatever he wanted to record us doing, on request.

If he picked the right vial. But if he picked wrong then he'd just fall asleep and we'd both feed off of him. And Atem told the woman who was being extorted which vial was the spiked one, so that she could tell her coworker.

I'm sure you can figure out how it turned out?

I know he volunteers at the clinic - that's probably how he got the sedative. There are also some monsters who can produce venom or powder with similar effects. There are a few ways.

Either way, though, that's a good con. Relying on other people's natures to get them to take the path that would benefit you the most... I get the feeling he would have been right up there with me in the ranks if he'd been at the Temps Commission. ... What did you do with the woman? Just let her go?

Temps Commission?

Ah...we let the woman go, after giving her the footage. Atem wouldn't hurt an innocent, and I doubt that she could, or would have wanted to, do anything that might hurt us. She seemed like a good person caught in a bad situation. If I had been able to at the time, I would have felt terribly sorry for her.

Sometimes...Bavan reminds me of Domino City. There's some pretty terrible people there too, who take advantage of the weak.

Any city or town has that dynamic to it if you look long and hard enough, even the white-picket-fence ones. But you did the right thing for that woman, and I'm glad. Some of the humans here really are the true monsters.

[this is where he usually ramps up into talking about Her, about the Fog, but he knows Ryou isn't a fan of that talk, so he dials back, realizing he has a convenient segue]

But yeah, the Temps Commission - they're the ones I worked with for a while back home, that pulled me out of the apocalypse. They really liked people who knew how to assess and manipulate a situation, because a lot of the time, that was the way they made time do what they figured it should. Make sure certain key events still happened. Either you manipulated people into playing their role in history, or you killed someone who might have kept them from it.

I was usually the one they'd send in with the sniper rifle.
