Personality:
The first thing people notice about Five is his apparent age. Then he opens his mouth, and they notice his horrible attitude. He's a fifty-something year-old man trapped inside the body of a teenager, going through his second puberty ... suffice to say he's grouchy. He's already lived nearly a full life ... and it wasn't one he wanted for himself, either. On one hand, it's nice to get the chance to do what he wants ... on the other, he can't do that until he's sure the world isn't going to end. Again. And again. So he's very short on patience and doesn't believe in wasting time on stupid, trivial stuff. He runs on sugary foods (despite his insistance that he doesn't like desserts), black coffee, pure stubborn will, and - especially when the chips are down - stiff drinks. Sometimes, though, beneath that Grumpy Old Man facade, a hint of the child he still partially is comes through: he is an absolute little shit at any opportunity that presents itself, adept at making his siblings look foolish or taking them down a peg for amusement's sake. He also displays his sense of humor in his fighting style on occasion: once he used his powers to replace a man's gun with a stapler.

Five has An Ego, and has even before he got lost in time. I headcanon that he was the first of the Hargreeves to discover his ability - aside from Luther, whose strength would have been almost immediately apparent - and that made the start of things. He considers his power more useful than his siblings, and more versatile ... so of course as a pre-teen in a family of seven with a father who treats you more like a science experiment, that's going to make you think you have a lot more worth than the others... especially when you also have a head for really, really complicated mathematics and probability maps. And like most teenagers, he thought he knew better than Reginald Hargreeves. Popping himself into the apocalypse curbed his ego for a while, but ... then he was taken in by the Handler and became the Temporal Commission's golden boy, which brought that ego right back again. He knows he's good at what he does, and he's not going to let anyone get in his way of doing it to get what he wants or needs at any given moment. Five's actor, Aiden Gallagher, summed it up very well in an interview: "Five was born with a genius-level intellect, and he has a factual morality instead of an emotional one. I think if he had never time traveled, he could have become something great."

For most of his life, Five has been extremely single-minded: his only goal was to find a way home and warn his siblings so that they could stop the impending apocalypse. When they inadvertantly bring that phenomenon back in time with them, his goal shifts slightly: to pull all his siblings together, stop the apocalypse, and bring them all home. He does this out of something that he would never admit aloud to anyone, ever: his family is his everything. They are the only human beings he had ever really known, and he loves them all in his own, strange, narcissistic way. In Ryslig, his motivation will likely be the same: doing whatever it takes to get back to his family. This will include murder, manipulation, and any means necessary, including siding with one of the Gods - most likely the Fourth. It doesn't mean that he enjoys killing, maiming, et cetera ... just that he accepts that it is a necessary evil in the moment, a means to an end.

Unless someone's last name is Hargreeves, Five doesn't like to give them the time of day. He considers himself a sort of lone wolf when apart from the rest of the Umbrella Academy, and will stubbornly work alone until there is absolutely no other option available to him. When he does work with anyone else, he does not trust them for a minute: his time in the Temporal Commission made him extremely paranoid ... some of them in particular were very fond of stabbing one another in the back, and he's not about to get caught in that position. When he encounters himself in the 1960s, he's twice as suspicious of himself, knowing how sly and smart he was then, and not to be trusted. In his eyes, every kindness has a motive or a price ... and in his experience, he's usually been right. Being a time-traveling assassin has made Five incredibly jaded, and almost nothing surprises or fazes him. Except, perhaps, slowly turning into the monster he's always been afraid that he really was.

Opt-Outs: Dental horror is pretty much my only no-go. I will also have an opt-out post for him if people are uncomfortable, since physically he's still underage.
